About The Role
We are seeking a highly experienced and technically proficient Staff Machine Learning (ML) Engineer specializing in ML Training Infrastructure. This role is pivotal in defining and driving the architecture, design, and development of scalable, reliable, and high-performance AI/ML platform infrastructure. As a key technical leader, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including machine learning engineers, research scientists, and platform engineers, to enable advanced AI research and large-scale model development. The position involves leading complex, ambiguous initiatives from conception through execution, influencing long-term infrastructure strategies, and establishing best practices to optimize model training workflows. The role offers an opportunity to impact the future of intelligent driving technologies across GM’s vehicle fleet, supporting the company's mission to revolutionize mobility through innovative AI solutions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience
- 5+ years of specialized experience in AI/ML infrastructure, including distributed training for large-scale models
- Strong programming skills in Python, with expertise in frameworks such as PyTorch (preferred), TensorFlow, or similar ML systems
- Proven experience designing and operating distributed systems for ML training, including GPU computing and cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure)
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-team infrastructure initiatives and drive measurable impact
- Excellent architectural judgment and ability to balance performance, reliability, usability, and cost considerations
- Willingness to travel to Sunnyvale, CA, as needed
- Ability to operate effectively in highly ambiguous and dynamic environments
Responsibilities
- Define and lead the architecture, design, and development of scalable ML training frameworks and platform capabilities
- Lead performance analysis and optimization efforts for distributed training workflows, enhancing scalability and efficiency across heterogeneous hardware
- Improve system observability, debuggability, operational excellence, and developer experience within the ML training stack
- Own large, cross-functional technical initiatives from strategy to delivery, including roadmap development and tradeoff analysis
- Identify and recommend long-term infrastructure investments, set engineering standards, and promote best practices across teams
- Collaborate with organizational teams to align requirements, resolve technical disagreements, and integrate new capabilities into the platform ecosystem
- Mentor engineers through technical guidance, design reviews, and hands-on collaboration to elevate engineering quality
