About The Role

Join the Agentic Search team at Atlassian as a Machine Learning Engineer (MLE) to develop and enhance intelligent search experiences that power Rovo Chat and AI-driven workflows across the Atlassian platform. In this role, you will operate at the intersection of machine learning, information retrieval, and large language models to deliver advanced search capabilities. Your work will directly impact millions of users by enabling them to find, understand, and act on their work data more efficiently. Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess strong software engineering fundamentals with experience in building scalable machine learning systems. Familiarity with search and information retrieval (IR), natural language processing (NLP), or large language models (LLMs) is essential. You should demonstrate the ability to operate independently, make informed technical decisions, and deliver impactful results in a fast-paced environment. A background in developing production ML pipelines, experience with reranking, embedding models, reinforcement learning, and proficiency in relevant programming languages and frameworks are highly desirable. A collaborative mindset and a passion for continuous learning are key attributes for success in this role.

Responsibilities

As a Machine Learning Engineer on the Agentic Search team, your responsibilities will include:

• Designing, building, and optimizing ML-powered search skills that integrate with Rovo's agentic architecture, including query understanding, retrieval, ranking, and answer generation.
• Developing and maintaining production ML pipelines to improve search relevance, utilizing techniques such as reranking, embedding models, and reinforcement learning.
• Driving end-to-end experimentation, from offline evaluation to online A/B testing, to measure and enhance search quality metrics.
• Collaborating with product managers, platform engineers, and applied science teams to translate user needs into scalable machine learning solutions.
• Contributing to the team’s evaluation infrastructure and data tooling to accelerate iteration and innovation in search capabilities.
