About The Role

As a Distinguished Machine Learning Engineer at Capital One, you will play a pivotal role in advancing the company’s capabilities in artificial intelligence and machine learning. Your primary responsibility will be to provide technical leadership in designing, developing, and deploying scalable machine learning systems that address complex business problems within the financial services industry. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of technological innovation, collaborating closely with cross-functional teams including data scientists, software engineers, product managers, and architects. You will serve as a subject matter expert in machine learning, guiding architectural decisions, reviewing model implementations, and ensuring the high availability, performance, and scalability of production systems. The role also entails mentoring junior engineers, fostering best practices, and staying abreast of emerging trends in machine learning and data engineering to keep Capital One at the cutting edge of technology.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a strong academic background and extensive industry experience. A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field is required; a master’s degree or higher is preferred. Candidates should have a minimum of 10 years of experience designing and building data-intensive solutions utilizing distributed computing frameworks. Proven expertise in programming languages such as Python, C++, Scala, or C is essential, with at least 6 years of hands-on experience. Additionally, candidates should have a minimum of 3 years of experience managing the full machine learning development lifecycle in a business-critical setting. Demonstrated ability to lead large-scale ML initiatives and optimize data pipelines is highly desirable. Excellent communication skills and a track record of industry impact through conference presentations, publications, or open-source contributions are advantageous. The candidate must also demonstrate leadership qualities, including the ability to attract, develop, and retain high-performing engineering talent.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality machine learning models and software components that solve complex financial industry challenges, collaborating with product, architecture, engineering, and data science teams.
  • Drive the creation and evolution of innovative ML models and intelligent systems to enhance business operations and customer experiences.
  • Lead large-scale ML initiatives with a focus on delivering value to customers, ensuring solutions are scalable, efficient, and reliable.
  • Leverage cloud-based architectures and technologies, such as AWS or Azure, to deploy and manage ML models at scale.
  • Optimize and maintain data pipelines to ensure seamless feeding of high-quality data for ML models.
  • Promote best practices across the engineering and modeling lifecycle, including version control, testing, and deployment strategies.
  • Mentor and develop engineering teams, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Stay current with emerging trends and advancements in machine learning, contributing to knowledge sharing through presentations, publications, or open-source projects.
