# Data Engineer & AI/ML Specialist, Mid Level (Remote)
## About the Role
Atmosera is seeking a mid-level Data Engineer / AI/ML Specialist to support the development of a next-generation AI-powered Electronic Health Record (EHR) MVP for senior and assisted living facilities. This role will focus on designing and delivering data pipelines, AI/ML integrations, and supporting infrastructure across the solution.
The position combines data engineering, healthcare data processing, AI/ML integration, and API development. You will work closely with solution architects and backend/API developers to build secure, scalable, HIPAA-compliant capabilities from data ingestion through model integration and API exposure.
## Key Responsibilities
- * Design, implement, and optimize OCR and data extraction pipelines for PDF referral forms and other healthcare documents.
- * Develop data transformation and mapping processes to store extracted information in Azure SQL schemas.
- * Build and maintain Bronze, Silver, and Gold medallion data architecture in Azure Data Lake Storage.
- * Support application workflows, analytics, and future machine learning model training through well-structured data architecture.
- * Implement and optimize Azure AI Search indexing for structured and unstructured data.
- * Integrate Azure OpenAI or equivalent LLM services using retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) patterns.
- * Develop natural language query capabilities using LLM and RAG technologies.
- * Implement initial predictive analytics models for use cases such as fall risk, infection risk, and medication cost forecasting.
- * Develop a compliance AI agent that performs scheduled documentation checks and flags potential violations.
- * Collaborate with the Solution Architect to ensure AI components are secure, HIPAA-compliant, and cost-optimized.
- * Work in Azure DevOps within sprint-based development processes.
- * Partner with backend and API developers on AI integration points.
- * Participate in architecture and design reviews and contribute to data model decisions.
- * Document data pipelines, AI integrations, and data flows to support future client handoff.
- * Support user acceptance testing (UAT) for AI and data features.
- * Tune models and validate extracted data for accuracy and quality.
## Required Qualifications
- * Hands-on experience with OCR technologies, including Azure Form Recognizer or Azure Document Intelligence.
- * Experience processing unstructured data.
- * Strong Python programming skills for AI pipelines and data processing.
- * Experience integrating LLMs, including Azure OpenAI, using RAG patterns.
- * Knowledge of basic predictive modeling techniques such as classification and regression.
- * Understanding of healthcare data compliance considerations.
- * Proficiency with REST APIs and external system integrations.
- * Understanding of HIPAA compliance and secure handling of Protected Health Information (PHI).
- * Familiarity with healthcare data formats and workflows, including HL7, FHIR, and eMAR.
- * Experience working in Agile, cross-functional product teams.
- * Ability to deliver end-to-end solutions from data ingestion through model integration and API exposure.
- * Strong documentation and knowledge-transfer skills.
## Preferred Qualifications
- * Experience developing healthcare software, including EHR, EMR, or related systems.
- * Familiarity with vector search and semantic search concepts.
- * Experience with Azure Machine Learning for model deployment.
- * Background in predictive analytics for healthcare outcomes.
