Technical Writer – AR/VR Data Collection

  • We are looking for an experienced Technical Writer to own the documentation ecosystem for our
  • Augmented Reality (AR) Data Collection operations. In this role, you will serve as the critical
  • bridge between our engineering/research teams and the operational workforce collecting
  • high-fidelity data in the field and lab environments.
  • You will not just "write" documentation; you will design the information architecture that ensures
  • safety, data integrity, and operational efficiency. You will document complex hardware setup
  • procedures, rigorous data capture protocols, and troubleshooting guides for next-generation AR
  • devices.
  • Key Responsibilities
  • ● Create Operational SOPs: Author, edit, and maintain detailed Standard Operating
  • Procedures (SOPs) for data collection pilots and large-scale studies. These documents
  • must ensure 100% protocol adherence by non-technical operators.
  • ● Hardware Documentation: Produce clear, visual-heavy guides for the setup,
  • calibration, hygiene, and maintenance of proprietary AR headsets, sensors, and motion
  • capture rigs.
  • ● Translate Engineering Requirements: Collaborate with Research Scientists, Hardware
  • Engineers, and Program Managers to distill complex technical requirements into
  • user-friendly instructions for the operations team.
  • ● Quality Assurance & Feedback Loops: Observe data collection sessions (in-lab or via
  • video) to validate the effectiveness of your documentation. iterate rapidly based on
  • operator confusion or data quality feedback.
  • ● Safety Protocols: Work with EHS (Environment, Health, and Safety) teams to
  • document safety guidelines for users navigating physical spaces while wearing
  • immersive hardware.
  • ● Information Architecture: Manage the knowledge base (e.g., Confluence, internal
  • Wikis), ensuring version control and easy access for a distributed workforce.
  • ● Multimedia Content: Create or coordinate the creation of instructional assets, including
  • diagrams, flowcharts, and short video tutorials to supplement written text.
  • Required Qualifications
  • ● Experience: 5+ years of experience as a Technical Writer, with at least 2 years focused
  • on Hardware, Manufacturing, Operations, or AR/VR technologies.
  • ● Portfolio: A strong portfolio demonstrating your ability to write procedural documentation
  • (SOPs), hardware user guides, or troubleshooting manuals. Please include samples of
  • "Step-by-Step" instructions.
  • ● Technical Aptitude: Demonstrated ability to quickly learn proprietary hardware and
  • software tools. You must be comfortable troubleshooting basic technical issues to
  • document them accurately.
  • ● Visual Communication: Proficiency in capturing and editing screenshots/photos and
  • creating diagrams (using tools like Snagit, Photoshop, Lucidchart, or Visio) to explain
  • physical actions.
  • ● Tools: Expert-level proficiency in documentation platforms such as Confluence, Google
  • Workspace, or specialized CMS tools (MadCap Flare, etc.).
  • ● Adaptability: Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment where hardware and
  • software specifications change rapidly.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • ● Domain Knowledge: Previous experience specifically with Augmented Reality,
  • Computer Vision, or Machine Learning data pipelines.
  • ● Video Production: Ability to film and edit short instructional videos (Premiere Pro,
  • Camtasia) for training purposes.
  • ● UX Writing: Experience writing on-device UI/UX copy or error messages for the data
  • collection software.
  • ● Training Experience: Background in instructional design or delivering training sessions
  • to operational staff.
  • Core Competencies
  • ● Audience Empathy: The ability to write for a non-technical audience (data collectors)
  • without losing the technical nuance required by engineers.
  • ● Attention to Detail: In data collection, a missed step means corrupted data. You must
  • be meticulous.
  • ● Proactive Communication: The confidence to chase down Subject Matter Experts
  • (SMEs) and extract the necessary information
