We are currently looking for an Intermediate Financial Analyst to join our Research Awards and Finance Services Team. In this position, you will report to the Sr. Controller, Research Financial Planning and Operations and you will be responsible for supporting the financial and reporting activities of the Research Institute at the Hospital for Sick Children.

Here's What You'll Get To Do

  • Act as a finance partner to Research operating departments and facilities by meeting regularly with managers to remain appraised of business operations, provide financial analysis and conduct meaningful explanations of performance results.
  • Participate in the budgeting and forecasting processes including the annual operating plan, long range planning and monthly forecasting activities.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly financial reports and presentations for senior management to support in their strategic decision-making.
  • Perform and support day-to-day accounting activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, variance investigations, and ensuring accurate financial records.
  • Apply and maintain strong understanding of accounting principles, including accruals, cut-offs, and appropriate expense recognition, to ensure integrity and accuracy of financial data.
  • Support research-related accounting functions, including areas such as bookkeeping activities and ensuring transactions are recorded in accordance with internal policies and accounting standards.
  • Maintain and support elements of the capital planning process, including tracking capital expenditures, reconciling capital accounts, and ensuring alignment with approved plans.
  • Provide backup support for key operational accounting functions, including cash application and related reconciliations, as required.
  • Assist in the development of customized reports and visually impactful presentations for various end users and stakeholders including annual budget presentations, reports on key performance indicators, etc.
  • Actively participate and provide support in financial review discussions and decision-making processes by gathering accurate information in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Assist with the audit process by drafting of accounting position memos, providing supporting documentation and responding to questions from the auditors.
  • Proactively identify areas of concern, challenge the status quo and discuss efficient process changes to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the financial information of the Research Institute.
  • Assist in the preparation of various large scale reporting requirements for governmental bodies and agencies.
  • Support ad hoc requests and special projects as required.

Here's What You'll Need

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration
  • Progress toward a recognized accounting designation (preferably CPA, CA)
  • 2+ years of accounting and/or bookkeeping experience preferably with a hospital, university or non-profit. Knowledge of PSAB and not-for-profit accounting standards are an asset
  • Strong understanding of fundamental accounting principles, including debits and credits, accruals, cut-offs, and account reconciliation
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve accounting discrepancies, and to investigate issues and implement corrective actions
  • Experience maintaining accurate financial records and supporting accounting frameworks or structures
  • Knowledge of PSAB and not-for-profit accounting standards is an asset
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interface with department managers, external auditors and all levels within the Research Institute
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to design, analyze, and prepare financial reports
  • Highly computer literate and proficient with the MS office suite, especially Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft and Adaptive Insights are an asset
  • Strong analytical skills, self-motivated, proactive, results-oriented and able to deliver to tight deadlines
  • Commitment to working in team-based environments
  • Passion for process simplification and improvement
