Job Title:

BI Developer

Location/Work Structure:

On-site, Columbus

Compensation:

$70,000–$100,000 annually

Who We Are:

Vernovis is a Total Talent Solutions company that specializes in Technology, Cybersecurity, Finance & Accounting functions. At Vernovis, we help these professionals achieve their career goals, matching them with innovative projects and dynamic direct hire opportunities in Ohio and across the Midwest.

Client Overview:

  • Vernovis is partnering with a client to find a BI Developer to join its Business Intelligence team. This individual will be responsible for building and maintaining reports, dashboards, and semantic models that drive decision-making across the company. The role is split roughly evenly between report development and analytics engineering.
  • The company is modernizing its reporting platform on Microsoft Fabric, moving from a legacy SSRS and large-import-model estate to a governed, Direct Lake semantic layer fed by its medallion data warehouse. The BI Developer will be a key builder in that modernization effort.

What Experience You’ll Have:

  • Experience writing and optimizing DAX for complex business logic, including time intelligence, evaluation context, financial calculations, and conditional aggregations.
  • Supported report conversions from legacy import models and SSRS to the Direct Lake/MI Cube architecture, ensuring converted reports stay accurate and consistent.
  • Strong experience with both Power BI report development and analytics engineering.
  • Experience building and maintaining Power BI semantic models, including measures, relationships, and role-level security.
  • Experience maintaining semantic models in TMDL format with version control through Git and deployment pipelines.
  • Ability to work directly with business stakeholders to gather, clarify, and document reporting requirements.

What You’ll Do:

  • Support conversion of reports from legacy import models and SSRS to the Direct Lake/MI Cube architecture, ensuring converted reports stay accurate and consistent.
  • Design, build, and maintain Power BI interactive reports and dashboards for stakeholders across finance, sales, and operations.
  • Translate business requirements into clear, accurate, and performant report layouts and visualizations.
  • Validate report outputs against source data and business expectations before production deployment; participate in review cycles with stakeholders.
  • Develop Power BI paginated reports where that format is the right fit; maintain a small legacy SSRS estate as a minor ongoing task during the transition.
  • Build and maintain Power BI semantic models, including measures, relationships, and role-level security.
  • Write and optimize DAX for complex business logic, including time intelligence, evaluation context, financial calculations, and conditional aggregations.
  • Maintain semantic models in TMDL format with version control through Git and deployment pipelines.
  • Ensure models are structured for reuse across reports and aligned to a single source of truth, centralizing business logic rather than burying it in individual reports.
  • Work directly with business stakeholders to gather, clarify, and document reporting requirements, including whether a report is still needed and how the underlying process now works in current systems.

What Experience Is Nice to Have:

  • Experience supporting the conversion of legacy import models and SSRS reports to a Direct Lake/MI Cube architecture.
  • Experience developing Power BI paginated reports and maintaining legacy SSRS reports.
  • A practical orientation toward using AI to work efficiently and solve business problems.
