  • Compensation: $61.00 - $75.00/hr
  • Position Summary:
  • We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Data Scientist to lead impactful, mission-driven projects that improve government services in areas such as tax, criminal justice, and social safety nets. In this full-time, remote, contract/temporary role, you will leverage your expertise in data analysis, predictive modeling, and AI to drive evidence-based decision-making. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including researchers, engineers, product managers, and stakeholders, to translate data insights into actionable solutions that promote equity and efficiency.   • Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct descriptive and inferential data analysis on diverse datasets (40%) to identify problems and measure impact; collaborate with teams to identify areas for improvement.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor predictive models utilizing advanced AI/ML techniques, including generative AI, to enhance product and service delivery.
  • Design and maintain dashboards, visualizations, and evaluation pipelines to communicate insights and improve AI system performance.
  • Investigate barriers faced by users, working with qualitative research teams to develop hypotheses and inform data-driven solutions.
  • Collaborate with program, product, engineering, and design teams to prioritize analytics initiatives where AI and data capacity can maximize impact.
  • Lead complex projects from planning to delivery, establishing technical documentation and ensuring timely communication of progress and deliverables.
  • Mentor junior data scientists, contribute to best practice standards, and foster a collaborative, innovative team environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental goals.
  • Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience as a Data Scientist or in a related analytics role.
  • Proficiency in Python or R, SQL, and experience working with collaborative coding tools (e.g., GitHub, Jupyter, Google Colab).
  • Strong background in statistical concepts, data transformation, and modeling with data warehouses such as BigQuery or Snowflake.
  • Experience with machine learning frameworks (e.g., scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow) and large language models, including prompt engineering and API integrations.
  • Expertise in building dashboards and reports using tools like Metabase, Tableau, Power BI, or Looker.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects, manage cross-functional relationships, and communicate technical insights clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • Passion for leveraging data to promote social impact and experience working in mission-driven environments.
  • Preferred Skills & Experience:
  • Familiarity with data transformation tools like dbt and working within cloud-based data ecosystems.
  • Background in social safety net programs, criminal justice, or related government services.
  • Experience with tax policy and related data analysis.
  • Fluency in additional languages beyond English.
  • Personal experience with the justice system, social safety programs, workforce training, or other relevant government domains.
  • Curiosity about emerging AI tools and a responsible approach to their usage.
