About The Role

The Senior Data Specialist at McKesson plays a pivotal role in designing, developing, and optimizing cloud-native data solutions on the Azure Data platform, with a primary focus on Azure Databricks. This role involves building enterprise-scale data pipelines, implementing modern lakehouse architectures, and enabling high-quality, trusted data products that support analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and strategic business decisions. The ideal candidate will bring extensive hands-on experience with Databricks, PySpark, advanced SQL, and various Azure data services, contributing to the delivery of scalable and robust data engineering solutions within a highly regulated environment.

This position requires close collaboration with architects, product teams, analytics stakeholders, and governance teams to ensure the delivery of scalable, reusable, and production-ready data solutions that adhere to enterprise standards for data quality, security, and governance. The Senior Data Specialist will also be responsible for mentoring junior engineers, driving best practices, and continuously evaluating emerging technologies to improve platform performance and operational efficiency.

Qualifications

To succeed in this role, candidates should possess a combination of technical expertise, industry experience, and leadership capabilities. A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field is required, with a master’s degree preferred. Candidates should have at least seven years of experience in data engineering and enterprise data platform development, with a minimum of three years of hands-on experience working with Azure Databricks in production environments.

Deep knowledge of PySpark, advanced SQL, and cloud-native data architecture is essential. Candidates should have extensive experience with Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake Storage, Delta Lake, Delta Live Tables, Change Data Capture, and Medallion Architecture. Strong understanding of Spark architecture, performance tuning, data modeling, and data governance is crucial. Certifications in Azure or Databricks are highly desirable.

Experience working within regulated industries such as healthcare, pharmaceuticals, or life sciences is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills, the ability to troubleshoot complex data pipeline issues, and strong communication skills to collaborate effectively across teams.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and optimize large-scale data pipelines leveraging Azure Databricks, PySpark, and advanced SQL techniques to support enterprise data needs.
  • Create and maintain batch and near real-time data ingestion frameworks using Azure Data Factory, Delta Lake, and CDC methodologies to ensure timely and accurate data flow.
  • Implement and support modern Lakehouse architectures utilizing Medallion Architecture (Bronze, Silver, Gold layers) to enable scalable and manageable data solutions.
  • Build and manage Delta Live Tables pipelines to enhance data reliability, maintainability, and quality.
  • Develop scalable ETL/ELT frameworks capable of processing high-volume structured and semi-structured data efficiently.
  • Optimize Spark workloads, including partitioning strategies, job orchestration, and SQL performance tuning for large-scale environments.
  • Establish and enforce data quality validation frameworks, lineage tracking, metadata management, and governance controls to ensure compliance and data integrity.
  • Support regulatory, security, and compliance requirements through documented controls and audit-ready processes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions and best practices.
  • Drive engineering excellence through code reviews, CI/CD adoption, reusable framework development, and mentoring junior team members.
  • Evaluate emerging Azure and Databricks capabilities, recommending enhancements to improve platform performance and operational efficiency.
