Part-Time Data Science Teaching Assistant

About the program:

The online M.S. in Data Science program at Boston College is seeking TAs to support our courses during the upcoming semester. This role is expected to average 10-15 hours per week across the semester, with a maximum of 170 hours. The TA role offers valuable experience in teaching and mentoring at the graduate level in a fast-growing program. TAs play a valued role in our program, supporting our students and faculty with excellence and kindness.

About the course:

In this Applied AI & Machine Learning course, students will gain a strong foundation in core principles of statistical learning and explore fundamental algorithms that enable machines to learn from data. The course emphasizes not only the theory behind these techniques, but also underscores the practical applications of machine learning across various domains, using Python and machine learning libraries and tools. In addition to the core set of machine learning algorithms, students will learn to apply advanced methods such as time series forecasting, reinforcement learning, and fine-tuning pre-trained models for domain-specific tasks, as well as how to design end-to-end machine learning pipelines that encompass data preprocessing, feature engineering, model training, and deployment through CI/CD workflows. Along the way, we will address key ethical issues in AI, including bias mitigation and fairness metrics.

Requirements:

• Strong Python skills and experience with libraries like scikit-learn and pandas.
• Strong knowledge of machine learning concepts, including supervised and unsupervised learning, model evaluation, and feature engineering.
• Experience with one or more advanced topics, such as time series forecasting, deep learning, fine-tuning pretrained models, MLOps, or responsible AI, is a plus.
• Academic background or coursework in machine learning, data science, statistics, computer science, or a closely related field is required.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills are required, as well as strong communication skills in written and spoken English.
• Prior teaching or mentoring experience is helpful but not required.

This is a non-benefited position, hours and shifts may vary. The hourly rate for this temporary, online position is expected to be $24.00/hr
