About the role
Job Type: Full-time
We build cloud-native geoscience and subsurface software for upstream oil & gas. For 30 years, our customers have run their interpretation and well data on legacy on-prem databases that their end users, geotechs, and IT teams know inside out. We've now matched the incumbents on application functionality, and our public and regulatory data coverage is closing fast.
The real barrier left is the data. Decades of heavily customized on-prem databases must move to the cloud without disrupting daily work, and those customizations don't always fit cleanly into a structured cloud database. We want to know exactly where the friction is before migrations start.
That's your job. You’ll work account by account to learn how customers store, customize, and use their data today, then turn that into a migration roadmap that de-risks the switch before it happens. You'll be equal parts data/IT expert and relationship builder. Be able to earn a DBA's trust, win over a skeptical geotech, and translate what you learn into clear requirements for product teams.
This role is self-directed. You won't get a checklist, you'll build the playbook.
- Build relationships and earn trust
- Get to know the IT staff, data managers, DBAs, and geoscientists at our customer accounts, and build real working relationships with them.
- Spend time with customer teams to understand how they actually work. The teams, the processes, and the politics around their data.
- Be the person customers reach out to with questions about their data and moving to the cloud.
- Map workflows, data, and customizations
- Identify how each customer's geoscience workflows run, from how data comes in to how it gets interpreted and used.
- Catalog what data they have and how much of it — well headers, directional surveys, logs/LAS, formation tops, interpretation, production, and public/regulatory data.
- Dig into the on-prem customizations that aren't in any feature list (custom fields, scripts, integrations, naming conventions, the tribal knowledge) and figure out what does and doesn't carry over to a cloud database.
- Find the gaps and shape the roadmap
- Spot where customers depend on something our cloud platform doesn't do yet.
- Turn those gaps into prioritized requirements for product, with the reasoning and customer impact behind them.
- Work with the dev team to make sure what we build holds up against how customers work.
- Get customers migration-ready
- Put together migration assessments for each account and a playbook we can reuse as we scale.
- Sort out how data gets mapped, transformed, and validated on the way to the cloud.
- Call out risks early so migrations don't stall once they're underway.
- Work across teams
- Be the link between sales, customer success, and product, and make sure what customers need gets back to the people building the product.
- Help the sales and account teams talk about migration with confidence.
- Requirements
- Strong IT and database background: SQL, relational data modeling, and hands-on experience with on-prem databases (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle), including data migration and ETL.
- Solid working knowledge of upstream oil & gas / geoscience data — well data, logs, interpretation data, and/or public and regulatory data.
- A proven ability to build relationships and trust with both deeply technical audiences (IT, DBAs) and end users (geoscientists, geotechs).
- A genuine self-starter who operates with autonomy, sets their own priorities, and drives outcomes without being managed task to task.
- Excellent communication skills. Be able to move fluidly between a technical migration conversation and a business or end-user one.
- Willingness and ability to travel to customer sites.
