About The Role

We are seeking an Engineering Data Scientist to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will collaborate closely with software engineers, hardware engineers, and fellow data scientists to develop predictive diagnostic technologies for enterprise hard disk drives used in hyperscale cloud environments. Your primary responsibility will be transforming vast amounts of manufacturing and telemetry data—over 10 TB generated daily—into intelligent systems that enhance storage reliability and maximize customer uptime. You will build machine learning models to identify early indicators of drive degradation, develop automated diagnostic algorithms using Python, and analyze large-scale telemetry data from enterprise storage systems. Additionally, you will create data visualization and engineering analysis tools, support root cause investigations through statistical analysis, and improve existing diagnostic software via automation and code refactoring. Your work will also involve deploying predictive analytics solutions into production environments, ensuring these systems operate reliably at scale. This role offers a unique opportunity to apply advanced data science techniques to real-world engineering challenges, directly impacting the reliability and performance of storage systems supporting some of the world's largest cloud infrastructures.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Data Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Proficiency in Python programming.
  • Experience with machine learning techniques and frameworks.
  • Strong data analytics and statistical analysis skills.
  • Knowledge of SQL or NoSQL databases.
  • Excellent analytical problem-solving abilities.
  • Fundamentals of software development and engineering mindset.
  • Interest in storage systems and HDD technology (preferred).
  • Experience with Hadoop, Hive, Ruby, front-end development, web applications, or data visualization (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Develop machine learning models to detect early signs of drive degradation.
  • Design and implement automated diagnostic algorithms using Python.
  • Analyze large-scale telemetry data from enterprise storage systems to identify patterns and insights.
  • Create data visualization tools and engineering analysis dashboards.
  • Support root cause analysis and troubleshooting through statistical methods.
  • Refine and enhance existing diagnostic software through automation and code improvements.
  • Collaborate with hardware, firmware, and software engineering teams to integrate predictive solutions.
  • Deploy and monitor predictive analytics models in production environments to ensure system reliability.
  • Contribute to the development of scalable data pipelines and infrastructure for data processing.
  • Participate in continuous learning and development initiatives to stay current with emerging technologies.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary package aligned with experience and qualifications.
  • Comprehensive health insurance including medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays.
  • Life, accident, and disability insurance.
  • Flexible spending accounts and health savings accounts.
  • Employee assistance programs and mental health support.
  • Tuition reimbursement and professional development opportunities.
  • Employee stock purchase plan and participation in incentive programs.
  • Additional voluntary benefits such as legal plans, pet insurance, and critical illness coverage.
  • Retirement savings plans including the WD Savings 401(k) Plan.

Equal Opportunity
