About The Role
The Data Engineer I at Providence plays a pivotal role in designing, developing, and maintaining modern, data-centric applications that underpin clinical and operational workflows across the healthcare system. This position involves leveraging cloud technologies, big data platforms, and contemporary software development frameworks to build scalable, efficient data pipelines. The successful candidate will be responsible for transforming raw data into meaningful insights through data transformation, enrichment, and provisioning processes, ensuring data accuracy and freshness across enterprise systems.
In addition to technical responsibilities, this role emphasizes collaboration with cross-functional teams including Product, Platform, and Architecture to align data solutions with strategic initiatives. The Data Engineer I will own the reliability, security, and cost-efficiency of Providence’s enterprise data platform, automating and monitoring production pipelines, resolving incidents, and partnering with analytics teams to meet strict service level agreements (SLAs). Mentoring junior engineers, contributing to research on emerging technologies, and establishing repeatable processes are also core aspects of this role. The candidate will work closely with stakeholders to ensure data governance, compliance, and operational excellence, supporting Providence’s mission of delivering exceptional healthcare services through innovative data solutions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience working with Snowflake, CTRL-M, and Azure Data Factory (ADF).
- Strong proficiency in SQL, with hands-on experience in Python and shell scripting (Bash/PowerShell) on Linux platforms.
- Experience with cloud computing environments and data warehousing solutions.
- Solid understanding of OLAP/dimensional modeling and relational database fundamentals.
- Knowledge of semi-structured data formats such as JSON and Parquet, and API integrations.
- Familiarity with open-source ELT/ETL tools and Git-based workflows, including CI/CD practices for data deployments.
- Experience in building and managing data ingestion pipelines from diverse sources into cloud data platforms.
- Working knowledge of Snowflake, including database objects, warehouses, and query optimization techniques.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable data pipelines for batch and streaming data across cloud services and Snowflake, ensuring data integrity and freshness.
- Implement automation and monitoring solutions for ETL/ELT processes, proactively identifying and resolving pipeline failures, performing root cause analysis, and reducing mean time to recovery (MTTR).
- Orchestrate data workflows, manage dependencies, and oversee connectors such as Fivetran and HVR for data replication and ingestion.
- Create operational automation scripts using SQL, Python, and shell scripting to streamline data processing tasks.
- Develop and enforce data observability practices, including logging, alerting, data quality checks, audits, and runbooks to ensure operational stability.
- Optimize Snowflake performance and cost management through warehouse tuning, caching strategies, and query optimization.
- Enforce data security protocols, including access controls and secrets management, to support compliance and audit requirements.
- Collaborate with product and analytics teams to understand data requirements, document procedures, and provide reliable on-call support on a rotational basis.
- Contribute to the research and adoption of emerging data technologies and best practices, establishing repeatable processes and templates for scalable data solutions.
