About The Company

Xplore Inc. is Canada's leading fibre, 5G, and satellite broadband provider dedicated to enhancing rural connectivity. Committed to delivering innovative and reliable broadband solutions, Xplore strives to bridge the digital divide by building a world-class fibre optic and 5G wireless network. Our mission is to enable better everyday living for rural communities today and for future generations, ensuring seamless access to high-speed internet and digital services across Canada.

About The Role

As a Senior GIS Data Engineer at Xplore Inc., you will be instrumental in designing, developing, and optimizing our enterprise data lakehouse platform and Machine Learning infrastructure. This is a remote position open to candidates across Canada, offering the flexibility to work from anywhere within the country. You will take ownership of the end-to-end GIS data engineering functions within the Data & AI team, focusing on spatial data ingestion, processing, and publishing to ArcGIS platforms. Your primary responsibilities will include managing the eCoverage platform and developing spatial feature pipelines that support machine learning models, analytics, and serviceability assessments.

You will also mentor intermediate and junior engineers, contribute to establishing platform standards, and collaborate closely with analytics and AI teams to deliver high-quality, reliable workflows. Your expertise will help shape the company's geospatial data strategy and ensure the delivery of scalable, efficient, and secure spatial data solutions that support business objectives and enhance network performance.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess 7 to 10 years of experience in data engineering, demonstrating a strong background in geospatial data management and cloud-based platforms. Expertise in Databricks, including Spark optimization, Delta Lake, and Unity Catalog governance, is essential. Proficiency in Python and PySpark for developing production-grade data pipelines is required. Candidates should have a deep understanding of GIS concepts, including PostGIS, spatial SQL, coordinate systems, and workflows within ArcGIS Online and Enterprise environments.

Experience with spatial indexing technologies such as H3 or comparable systems at scale is highly desirable. The candidate should also have a proven track record in managing vendor relationships, including scoping geospatial use cases, drafting data contracts, and overseeing project deliverables. Knowledge of CI/CD practices, infrastructure-as-code, and data observability solutions will be advantageous. Strong communication skills and prior mentorship experience are necessary to succeed in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Own and operate GIS workflows that power eCoverage qualification processes, including H3 indexing, framework selection, and probabilistic coverage modeling within Databricks.
  • Develop and maintain spatial feature engineering pipelines on Databricks, providing geospatial features for machine learning models related to RF propagation, churn prediction, and demand forecasting.
  • Engineer reliable pathways for publishing spatial layers from Databricks to ArcGIS Online and Enterprise, ensuring high performance and data integrity.
  • Optimize compute resources and costs on Databricks across different deployment modes, including tuning Spark jobs, partitioning strategies, and spatial query performance enhancements.
  • Manage large-scale spatial data ingestion, including shapefiles, rasters, and vector tiles, into Unity Catalog with governed schema and lineage tracking.
  • Lead vendor engagement efforts by defining geospatial use cases, drafting data contracts, and ensuring third-party deliverables meet project standards.
  • Collaborate with data science, analytics, and network teams to translate business needs into scalable, efficient spatial data products and workflows.
  • Implement governance frameworks, including data lineage, cataloging, and quality controls, to ensure compliance and data integrity.
  • Translate complex business requirements into scalable and maintainable data engineering solutions that support company growth and innovation.
