Data and Analytics Intern

United Way has operated for 65 years in Utah County. We created the first domestic violence shelter, the first transit program for handicapped people, and many other projects that continue to benefit Utah County even decades later.

Now at $5 million in revenue and an exponentially growing population, the United Way of Utah County is poised to greatly increase its impact. To meet the increased need for childhood literacy, teen mental health, and family financial stability, United Way needs savvier and faster ways to analyze its programs and community data and make decisions based on this data.

The primary focus of this position will be building data models, metrics, dashboards, and reports in Microsoft Power BI. The student will help turn real organizational questions into useful tools for staff and leadership.

Projects may include:

• Power BI Development
• Build a unified constituent data model connecting participants, programs, and enrollment.
• Add new data sources, such as paratransit and 211 website/app data, into Power BI.
• Create reusable metrics and calculations for attendance, participation, referrals, and other program outcomes.
• Reporting & Analysis
• Build reports to track program signups, attendance, retention, and repeat participation.
• Analyze cross-program participation to see how families use multiple services.
• Build a repeatable Summer Learning report showing changes in math and reading scores.
• Create simple forecasting tools using current pace, prior-year pace, and seasonal trends.

• Advanced Projects
• Depending on experience and interest:
• Build a Kindergarten Readiness trend report using community-level data.
• Analyze key strategic areas such as volunteerism, information and referral, and partnerships.
• Explore ROI and efficiency, such as dollars or volunteer hours compared with program outputs.

• Students will gain hands-on experience with Power BI, data modeling, dashboard development, data integration, forecasting, and applied data analysis.
• Qualifications:
• The right candidate will bring the skills of:
• Data Analysis and Visualization: Basic understanding of data analysis and visualization principles.
• Technical Proficiency: Comfortable working with Excel and PowerQuery, SQL scripts, and data sources in general.
• Technical Adaptability: Ability to quickly learn to navigate tools like PowerBI, MySQL databases, Qualtrics, Quickbooks, Salesforce, and other data storage systems.
• Attention to Detail: Ensure data accuracy and consistency in reports, and correctly identify and interpret meaningful patterns within the data.
• Communication Skills: Capable of explaining data mechanics to non-technical team members as well as receiving and interpreting instruction from non-technical team members.

• We particularly encourage students to apply who are studying Information Systems, Applied Mathematics, Sociology, Public Health, Business, Nonprofit Management, or related majors.
• Compensation:

$15/hour, 10-20 hours a week. The schedule is highly flexible according to the student's needs, but the majority of the hours should be completed in the United Way office in downtown Provo between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. M-F. Candidates who are able to commit to 20 hours a week are also eligible for sick and vacation pay.
