Summary

  • The Lead Tableau Developer is responsible for the design, development, and delivery of business intelligence solutions that enable data-driven decision-making across the organization. This is a hands-on technical role responsible for building high-quality Tableau dashboards and data sources while establishing BI development standards, optimizing performance, and ensuring effective governance.
  • The Lead Tableau Developer partners closely with business stakeholders and data engineering teams to translate business needs into meaningful analytics solutions. This role also serves as a technical resource and mentor to junior team members, providing guidance on Tableau development, SQL, data visualization, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain Tableau dashboards, workbooks, and published data sources that support key business functions and decision-making.
  • Develop and optimize SQL queries, data sources, extracts, and live connections to ensure accurate, efficient, and reliable reporting.
  • Lead Tableau architecture and performance optimization, including LOD expressions, table calculations, parameters, actions, extract strategies, and workbook performance.
  • Partner with Data Engineering and technical teams to ensure data models, reporting logic, and upstream processes are designed to support scalable and accurate analytics.
  • Establish and maintain Tableau governance standards, including certified data sources, naming conventions, permissions, projects, refresh schedules, and Tableau Cloud/Server administration.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to understand business questions, gather requirements, translate needs into technical solutions, and deliver intuitive dashboards and reports.
  • Lead dashboard and solution design reviews, providing recommendations on data structure, Evaluate and improve the existing BI environment by identifying opportunities to consolidate, automate, or retire redundant reports and improve overall reporting efficiency. Serve as a technical subject matter expert and resource for Tableau and business intelligence, providing guidance on development standards, troubleshooting, and technical decisions.
  • Mentor and develop junior analysts, including providing technical coaching, reviewing SQL and Tableau work, pairing on complex projects, and supporting their progression toward independent dashboard ownership.
  • Support the professional development of junior team members by providing feedback on technical and stakeholder-facing skills and communicating development progress and opportunities to management.
  • Stay current with BI, Tableau, data visualization, and analytics best practices and recommend improvements that enhance the organization's reporting capabilities.
  • Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, Business, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5 or more years of experience developing Tableau solutions, including at least 2 years in a senior or lead capacity.
  • Strong SQL skills with experience querying data warehouses or relational databases.
  • Advanced knowledge of Tableau Desktop and Tableau Cloud/Server, including dashboard development, data sources, extracts, permissions, projects, and refresh schedules.
  • Demonstrated expertise with Tableau functionality including LOD expressions, table calculations, parameters, actions, and performance optimization.
  • Experience mentoring, onboarding, coaching, or developing junior technical team members.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to translate complex business requirements into practical analytics solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts and tradeoffs to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of data visualization principles and business intelligence best practices.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Tableau Desktop Certified Professional or Tableau Server Certified Associate certification.
  • Experience with Python and/or GitHub.
  • Experience migrating from a legacy BI or reporting platform.
  • Experience working with healthcare data or within the healthcare industry.
  • Experience with cloud data warehouses such as Amazon Redshift or SQL Server
