We are a fast-growing Merchant Cash Advance (MCA) funder headquartered in New York City, looking for an experienced, sharp, and highly analytical Underwriting Analyst to join our fully remote team.
About the Role
In this role, you will be responsible for evaluating small-to-midsized business files, assessing risk, and structuring funding offers. This role will report to the Director of Underwriting. Because this is a remote position, we are looking for a self-motivated professional with exceptional pattern recognition who can work efficiently under tight deadlines without sacrificing quality. You will have a direct impact on our portfolio's health by balancing competitive funding volume with strict default mitigation.
Responsibilities
- Risk Assessment & Analysis: Perform comprehensive financial analysis on small and medium sized business applicants by reviewing bank statements, processing statements, credit reports, and tax returns; partner with automated tools to help with risk assessment.
- Fraud Detection: Review small and medium businesses for indicators of fraud including altered documents, ghost businesses, stolen identities.
- Offer Structuring: Determine appropriate funding amounts, factor rates, and daily/weekly payment structures based on company guidelines and cash flow metrics.
- Background Verification: Utilize industry tools to verify merchant identity, business standing, and past default history.
- Collaboration & Speed: Partner closely with independent sales organizations (ISOs) to clear stipulations and move files from submission to funding efficiently.
- Portfolio Monitoring: Monitor early-stage performance of funded files to refine internal risk models and underwriting logic.
Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum of 1-3 years of direct underwriting experience; experience in alternative small business lending space a plus.
- Financial Literacy: Strong ability to analyze cash flow, bank statements, profit/loss metrics, and identify volatile daily balances or negative days.
- Remote Competency: Proven track record of working independently in a remote environment. High organizational skills and the ability to manage a heavy, fast-moving daily pipeline. Ability to work through upwards of 50 deals per day.
- Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills to articulate risk rationales clearly to management.
- Availability: Must be able to operate effectively during standard East Coast business hours to align with our NYC headquarters and deal flow. Ability to travel to NYC periodically.
