About The Role

The Senior Data Specialist at McKesson plays a vital role in designing, developing, and optimizing cloud-native data solutions primarily on the Azure Data platform, with a focus on Azure Databricks. This position is responsible for building enterprise-scale data pipelines, implementing modern lakehouse architectures, and enabling high-quality, trusted data products that support analytics, artificial intelligence/machine learning initiatives, and strategic business decision-making. The ideal candidate will bring extensive hands-on experience with Databricks, PySpark, advanced SQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake Storage, Delta Lake, Delta Live Tables, and Change Data Capture frameworks.

This role involves working closely with architects, product teams, analytics stakeholders, and governance groups to deliver scalable, reusable, and production-ready data engineering solutions within a highly regulated environment. The Senior Data Specialist will also be instrumental in supporting data quality, security, and governance standards across the enterprise, ensuring compliance and operational excellence.

Qualifications

The successful candidate should possess a combination of technical expertise, industry experience, and leadership skills. A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field is required; a master’s degree is preferred. Candidates should have at least seven years of experience in data engineering and enterprise data platform development, with a minimum of three years of deep, hands-on experience specifically with Azure Databricks in production environments. Proven experience in building and supporting enterprise-scale data pipelines and Lakehouse implementations is essential, particularly in regulated industries such as healthcare or life sciences.

Technical proficiency should include expert-level skills in Azure Databricks, PySpark, advanced SQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake Storage, Delta Lake, Delta Live Tables, Change Data Capture, and Medallion Architecture. Strong knowledge of data modeling, data warehousing, metadata management, and data governance best practices is also required. Certifications in Azure and Databricks are highly desirable.

Responsibilities

Azure Databricks & Data Engineering

  • Design, build, and optimize large-scale data pipelines leveraging Azure Databricks, PySpark, and advanced SQL techniques.
  • Create and maintain batch and near real-time data ingestion frameworks using Azure Data Factory, Delta Lake, and CDC methodologies.
  • Develop and support modern Lakehouse architectures using Medallion Architecture (Bronze, Silver, Gold layers).
  • Implement Delta Live Tables pipelines to enhance data reliability, maintainability, and quality.
  • Build scalable and resilient ETL/ELT frameworks capable of processing high volumes of enterprise data.
  • Optimize Spark workloads, including partitioning strategies, job orchestration, and SQL performance tuning.
  • Establish monitoring, alerting, troubleshooting, and performance-tuning practices to ensure pipeline robustness.

Data Quality & Governance

  • Implement data quality validation frameworks, lineage tracking, and metadata management systems.
  • Automate testing and reconciliation processes to maintain data accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
  • Support compliance, security, and regulatory requirements through documented controls and audit-ready processes.

Solution Delivery & Leadership

  • Work collaboratively with architects and stakeholders to translate business needs into scalable technical solutions.
  • Promote engineering best practices, conduct code reviews, and drive CI/CD adoption.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership in Databricks and Azure-based projects.
  • Assess emerging Azure and Databricks features and recommend enhancements to improve platform performance and operational efficiency.
