About The Role

The Lead Machine Learning Engineer at Vanguard will play a pivotal role in shaping and executing the company's AI and ML strategies within the Financial Advisory Services (FAS) division. This leadership position involves overseeing a team of talented Machine Learning Engineers responsible for designing, developing, deploying, and scaling advanced AI solutions that align with business objectives. The role requires close collaboration with cross-functional teams including Product Management, Data Science, Architecture, and Technology to deliver production-ready, scalable, reliable, and compliant AI capabilities. The successful candidate will drive end-to-end solution delivery, from architecture planning through implementation, deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement, ensuring that AI initiatives support Vanguard’s commitment to operational excellence and innovation.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field, with a preference for candidates holding a graduate degree. A minimum of eight years of relevant work experience in machine learning, data engineering, or software development is required. Proven leadership experience in managing technical teams, developing scalable AI solutions, and implementing best practices in engineering and data governance is essential. Strong expertise in machine learning frameworks, cloud platforms, data pipelines, and model deployment strategies is expected. Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate complex technical concepts into business value are vital for success in this role.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership in hiring, coaching, talent development, performance management, and compensation decisions in accordance with Human Resources policies and procedures.
• Collaborate with Enterprise, Solution, and Domain Architects to define AI/ML solution architectures, translating strategic initiatives into actionable roadmaps, epics, and engineering workstreams.
• Lead cross-functional teams across Product, Data Science, Platform, and Engineering to drive solutions from concept to production, ensuring alignment with business objectives and enterprise standards.
• Establish and promote engineering best practices, reusable frameworks, and platform capabilities that enhance scalability, consistency, and delivery efficiency of AI/ML initiatives.
• Oversee the design, implementation, and continuous evolution of data, feature, and model pipelines to support reliable and scalable AI/ML solutions.
• Apply expertise in machine learning, statistics, optimization, and experimentation methodologies to operationalize predictive and decision-support capabilities.
• Evaluate data quality, feature readiness, and model inputs in partnership with Data Science teams to ensure successful model development and deployment.
• Drive operational excellence through automation, observability, monitoring, incident management, and continuous improvement practices for AI/ML systems in production.
• Ensure adherence to enterprise governance, security, risk, compliance, and model lifecycle management standards.
• Engage with business and technology stakeholders to understand objectives, assess opportunities, and translate complex requirements into effective technical solutions.
• Support departmental planning, prioritization, and execution of strategic objectives while balancing delivery commitments and operational needs.
• Establish scalable operating models, support processes, and service standards that ensure the long-term sustainability of AI/ML products and platforms.
• Communicate technical strategies, solution recommendations, progress updates, and business impacts to senior leadership teams.
• Participate in special projects and undertake additional duties as assigned to support Vanguard’s strategic initiatives.
