# Machine Learning Engineer – Recommendations & Retrieval

## About the Role

Etsy is seeking a **Machine Learning Engineer** to join its Recommendations Retrieval team and work across the ML, Data Platform, and product engineering organizations. This role focuses on building machine learning tools, platforms, workflows, and pipelines that help data scientists and ML engineers access feature data, develop models, test hypotheses, and productionize machine learning solutions on Google Cloud.

As part of a cross-functional team of engineers, machine learning scientists, and product managers, you will help improve the shopping experience for millions of Etsy buyers. You will apply machine learning algorithms to improve the ranking and suggestions of localized results, transform data into relevant buyer experiences, and contribute across Etsy's recommendations and machine learning technology stack.

## Key Responsibilities

• * Build and contribute across Etsy's recommendations stack, including application interfaces and back-end technologies.
• * Work with technologies including **Python, MySQL, Scala, Vertica, PySpark, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and Airflow**.
• * Apply machine learning algorithms to improve ranking and suggestions for localized results.
• * Create workflows and pipelines that effectively transform data into appropriate results for buyers.
• * Work cross-functionally with engineering teams including machine learning infrastructure, data science, and search experience.
• * Participate in technical design, prioritization, and implementation.
• * Deploy machine learning models to production, including application development when required for a feature.
• * Provide detailed and constructive design and code reviews.
• * Develop maintainable, understandable, and testable software.
• * Write and manipulate data at large scale while maintaining a focus on software quality and maintainability.
• * Collaborate with data scientists, designers, product-facing engineers, managers, and other stakeholders.
• * Contribute to additional responsibilities and projects as the role evolves.

## Required Qualifications

### Education & Experience

• * **M.S. or Ph.D.** in Computer Science or a related engineering field.
• * At least **2 years of practical machine learning experience**.
• * Successful track record applying machine learning techniques to real-world problems.
• * Hands-on experience training, deploying, monitoring, debugging, and iterating on **production machine learning systems**.
• * Experience working with large-scale machine learning systems.

### Technical Skills

• * Production experience developing large-scale machine learning systems using **Python, Scala, PyTorch, TensorFlow, or similar technologies**.
• * Experience in one or more areas such as:

• * Deep learning
• * Multi-modal learning
• * Reinforcement learning
• * Experience with machine learning systems in **search, recommendation, and/or advertising systems**.
• * Ability to write understandable and testable code.
• * Ability to work with and manipulate data at large scale.
• * Strong focus on maintainable software and machine learning systems.

### Collaboration & Communication

• * Strong cross-functional collaboration skills.
• * Ability to contribute to technical design, prioritization, implementation, and code reviews.
• * Empathy, communication, and technical skills are valued equally.

## Work Arrangement & Location

• * **Employment Type:** Full-time
• * **Reporting To:** Engineering Manager
• * **Primary Location:** Candidates based within commutable distance of Etsy's **Brooklyn office** are prioritized.
• * **Hybrid Schedule:** Depending on proximity, team members are expected to work from the office **once or twice per week**.
• * **Remote:** Candidates outside commuting distance may be considered on a case-by-case basis, with an expectation of occasional travel to the office.

## Compensation & Benefits

Base salary is determined by location, skills, and experience.

### Salary Range

• * **Geo-1:** $182,000 – $246,000 USD annually
• * **Geo-2:** $164,000 – $222,000 USD annually
