About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal AI Engineer specializing in Architecture to join our team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to lead the design and development of advanced AI solutions in a secure, regulated environment. The Principal AI Engineer will play a pivotal role in translating complex business and government mission requirements into scalable, secure, and reusable AI capabilities. Initially focusing on solution design and hands-on implementation, the successful candidate will progressively take on broader responsibilities including establishing architectural standards, defining technical strategies, and ensuring governance across projects. This position requires a collaborative mindset, as the engineer will work closely with product managers, data scientists, software engineers, security teams, and government stakeholders to deliver innovative AI solutions that meet stringent security and compliance standards.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, data science, information systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. Significant professional experience in software engineering, particularly in delivering production-grade applications or platforms, is essential. Hands-on experience with AI, machine learning, or data-intensive solutions is required, along with proficiency in Python and familiarity with APIs, cloud services, data pipelines, and source control. Knowledge of modern generative AI patterns such as large language models, retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings, and AI agents is highly desirable. Candidates should have a solid understanding of cloud-native architectures, system integration, security practices, and the ability to evaluate and select appropriate technical solutions. Strong communication skills, the ability to work across diverse teams, and the capacity to incorporate security, privacy, and compliance considerations into technical designs are critical. Preferred qualifications include experience with government clients, familiarity with security frameworks like NIST or FedRAMP, and relevant cloud or security certifications.
Responsibilities
Design, prototype, and develop AI-powered applications, services, agents, and workflows that address complex business and government needs. Translate mission requirements into practical, scalable AI solutions using technologies such as large language models, natural language processing, computer vision, and retrieval-augmented generation. Build reusable components, APIs, evaluation frameworks, and reference implementations to facilitate consistent deployment across projects. Integrate AI capabilities seamlessly with existing enterprise platforms, data sources, and workflows, ensuring secure and reliable operation. Evaluate different AI models, platforms, and vendors based on performance, cost, security, and scalability considerations. Contribute to the development of comprehensive solution architectures covering applications, data, infrastructure, and security, partnering with senior architects to establish standards and best practices. Provide technical guidance, conduct code reviews, mentor engineering teams, and support the growth of AI capabilities within the organization. Participate in architecture reviews, document technical decisions, and help shape the overall technical strategy and standards for AI initiatives. Engage with government and stakeholder teams to support technical discovery sessions, demonstrations, proofs of concept, and proposals. Communicate complex AI concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences, ensuring alignment with security and compliance policies. Support the transition of prototypes into secure, scalable production systems while staying informed about evolving government policies, standards, and responsible AI practices.
