The organization operates within the software platform industry, managing and developing complex database environments that support merged technology stacks. It faces the challenge of consolidating and upgrading a dual database estate originating from a merger, involving Microsoft SQL Server and MySQL environments hosted on AWS. The company addresses this challenge by maintaining direct control and configuration of its database infrastructure, ensuring operational integrity and compliance with customer, auditor, and insurer requirements.

About the Opportunity:

The LEAD DATABASE & DATA PLATFORM ENGINEER will take full ownership of the organization's relational database estate. This role is critical in managing and upgrading the existing database systems, setting technical standards, and improving the overall data environment. The position directly impacts the stability and scalability of the data infrastructure, supporting multiple engineering teams and ensuring data reliability and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities:

  • Administer and manage Microsoft SQL Server databases, including installation, configuration, and maintenance on self-managed Windows Server environments.
  • Perform Windows Server administration tasks, including operating system upgrades and migrations.
  • Execute SQL Server upgrades with thorough documentation of source and target versions and methods.
  • Manage SQL Server high availability solutions such as Always On Availability Groups and failover clustering.
  • Administer MySQL databases hosted on AWS RDS.
  • Utilize AWS services including EC2, RDS, S3, IAM, and CloudWatch for database environments.
  • Apply AI tools to improve database management and operational tasks.
  • Lead assessment and improvement initiatives of the existing database estate.
  • Establish data standards and review schema and data access designs across application teams.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in database administration.
  • Proven experience with full SQL Server installations and management on Windows Server, not limited to managed services.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform OS-level management beneath live production SQL Server instances.
  • Documented experience with recent SQL Server upgrades specifying source/target versions and upgrade methods.
  • Expertise in SQL Server high availability configurations.
  • Experience with MySQL administration.
  • Proficiency with AWS database-related services.
  • Prior responsibility for end-to-end ownership of production database environments.
  • Experience in setting data standards and reviewing database design.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Snowflake administration and development.
  • Knowledge of ETL pipelines and tools such as Rivery or dbt.
  • Familiarity with data warehouse design and data lake implementations on S3.
  • Experience with BI and analytics tools like Metabase or QuickSight.
  • Understanding of data governance and data quality practices.
  • Experience migrating SQL Server databases to managed services.

Pay Range and Compensation Package:

Salary up to $149,500.
