About the Department:

  • The Engineering Technical Analyst will join the Grid Management Department, supporting HPD and LVD dispatch and control centers. This team ensures that customers receive reliable electricity service and that hazard and outage data is accurate and compliant with Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) reporting standards.
  • Our operators rely on accurate data in our Audit Management System (ADMS/OMS) to dispatch field crews effectively and restore service quickly. Accurate outage and hazard reporting is critical to MPSC metrics, including SAIDI, SAIFI, and CAIDI.

Role Overview:

  • The Engineering Technical Analyst will support data quality and outage correction tasks for low-voltage operations. This role involves analyzing outage events, validating and correcting OMS data, and ensuring accurate outage start/stop and relief times. Analysts will work closely with dispatch teams and quality engineers, and may assist during storm restoration events in administrative capacities.
  • This is an office-based role with no regular fieldwork, though occasional travel between locations (e.g., Grand Rapids → Jackson) may be required for training.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze and correct outage and operational data within the OMS system
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory reporting requirements (MPSC metrics)
  • Collaborate with dispatch operators to validate field events
  • Support storm restoration efforts with administrative or operational tasks as needed
  • Participate in training programs to gain proficiency in OMS and organizational procedures
  • Perform duties with limited supervision once trained
  • Communicate effectively with team members and stakeholders
  • Maintain composure in high-pressure, fast-paced situations

Candidate Profile:

  • Required Qualifications:
  • Technical mindset with problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Technical degree or equivalent experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (e.g., Construction Technology, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Design/Drafting) OR
  • Associate technical degree + 2 years of relevant technical experience OR
  • High school diploma + 4 years of relevant technical experience
  • Ability to read schematics, maps, and technical drawings
  • Strong computer skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint; not necessarily advanced tools like Visio)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a high-stress, fast-paced environment
  • Preferred Experience:
  • Dispatch experience (utilities, 911, emergency services, or similar)
  • Field experience in construction, utility operations, or technical trades with computer proficiency
  • Experience with data quality analysis, even outside the electric utility industry
  • Other Requirements:
  • Safety-sensitive role; pre-employment and random drug testing may apply
  • Ability to travel occasionally for training (mileage reimbursed)

Training & Onboarding:

  • Week 1: E-learning and company orientation, NERC compliance training
  • Weeks 2–4: Onsite shadowing with dispatch operators
  • Week 5 onward: Hands-on OMS outage correction training with quality engineers
  • Mentorship provided for ongoing development
