About The Role

The Energy Supply Data Scientist (I&II) plays a critical role in transforming complex operational and market data into actionable insights that support strategic decision-making. This position involves analyzing vast amounts of data generated from day-ahead and real-time markets, renewable and thermal generation, weather patterns, transmission availability, and market prices. The incumbent collaborates with various teams, including grid operations, finance, and regulatory units, to develop models and tools that improve forecasting accuracy, reduce deviations, and optimize resource deployment. The role demands a combination of technical expertise, analytical skills, and industry knowledge to enhance PacifiCorp’s market participation, resource planning, and operational efficiency. The position is available at multiple levels, with responsibilities tailored to experience and educational background, offering an excellent opportunity for growth within a dynamic energy environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Analytics, Data Science, Math, Statistics, Physics, or a related field; or equivalent experience
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, SQL, C, C++, Java, JavaScript
  • Knowledge of data platforms including MapReduce, Hadoop, Hive, MySQL
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Effective technical writing and public speaking abilities
  • Familiarity with machine learning techniques and data governance best practices
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and support multiple functions
  • For Data Scientist II level: minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience
  • Experience with BI and data analytics tools such as Power BI and Tableau
  • Hands-on experience with MLOps practices including CI/CD pipelines, model deployment, monitoring, and version control
  • Experience with cloud platforms like AWS, GCP, or Azure, specifically Azure Databricks, Azure Machine Learning Studio, and Azure Data Factory
  • Proficiency with version control tools such as Azure DevOps and Git
  • Strong storytelling skills through data visualizations and reports

Responsibilities

  • Create and develop data mining models to extract insights from internal and external data sources
  • Design and implement custom data models and algorithms to analyze large datasets effectively
  • Develop tools and testing frameworks to ensure data accuracy and integrity
  • Perform statistical analysis and craft methodologies to identify trends and patterns in data
  • Collaborate with grid operations, finance, and regulatory teams to analyze complex problems, identify issues, and deliver innovative solutions
  • Provide technical expertise to support load forecasting, energy trading, and market participation strategies
  • Research emerging data science techniques and incorporate them into analytical tools and processes
  • Create comprehensive reports presenting findings, recommendations, and actionable insights
  • Utilize data insights to enhance market participation, resource planning, and energy trading strategies
  • Gather, document, and manage business use cases and requirements to align data initiatives with organizational goals
  • Support data literacy initiatives and scripting knowledge development within the team
  • Participate in industry associations and work groups influencing policy and best practices in energy markets
