The Senior Operations Research Scientist role is responsible for architecting and implementing simulation and optimization products to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of McKesson's supply chain operations as part of the Operations Research group within the Enterprise Data Science Team. Our team applies data science and operations research methodologies to interdisciplinary business problems across Supply Chain Operations. This position will work on strategic in-flight use cases around inventory optimization and upcoming use cases around transportation and network modelling. The candidate should possess the ability to develop statistical models and derive business insights that are required to drive innovation at McKesson. The candidate should also be an active learner able to grasp and apply new analytic approaches.
About The Role
The Senior Operations Research Scientist will play a pivotal role in designing and deploying advanced simulation and optimization solutions that directly impact McKesson’s supply chain efficiency. This role involves developing digital twins and stochastic process models to support decision-making across various supply chain functions such as inventory management, transportation planning, and labor optimization. The individual will collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate complex data-driven insights into actionable recommendations, enabling strategic improvements and operational excellence.
Key responsibilities include leading the development of innovative modeling frameworks, driving the adoption of simulation tools within the organization, and measuring the impact of implemented solutions. The role requires a balance of technical expertise, strategic thinking, and effective communication skills to convey complex analytical results to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Qualifications
Candidates should possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Operations Research, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field, with typically 7+ years of relevant experience in a similar role. Advanced degrees (Master’s or PhD) are preferred. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in developing stochastic process simulations, with a strong foundation in probability, statistics, and machine learning techniques. Proficiency in data wrangling using SQL and statistical modeling in Python or R is essential. Additionally, the candidate must have excellent communication skills to effectively present findings to technical teams and executive leadership.
Preferred qualifications include experience with optimization solvers such as CPLEX, Gurobi, or Xpress, familiarity with reinforcement learning, and developing decision support tools or dashboards. Exposure to financial modeling, cost optimization, and modern data platforms like Databricks, Snowflake, or Azure ML will be advantageous.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and implement digital twins, simulation models, and optimization frameworks to support supply chain decision-making processes, including inventory, transportation, and labor planning.
- Translate complex simulation and optimization outputs into clear, actionable insights for business partners and stakeholders.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities for process improvements and innovation through advanced analytics.
- Lead efforts to drive the adoption of simulation and optimization tools across the organization, ensuring scalability and usability.
- Measure and report on the impact of implemented solutions, continuously refining models based on feedback and new data.
- Stay current with industry trends and emerging analytical techniques to ensure McKesson remains at the forefront of supply chain optimization.
