Role Description The Data Science Vice President is a full-time, remote leadership role responsible for shaping CaterPillar’s data strategy and advanced analytics capabilities. This role oversees the design and implementation of data science solutions that optimize route planning, job matching, pricing, customer experience, and marketplace performance. Day-to-day responsibilities include leading and mentoring data science and analytics teams, defining data governance standards, and collaborating with product, engineering, and operations to deploy scalable models into production. The Vice President will evaluate new data sources and tools, establish performance metrics and experimentation frameworks, and communicate insights and recommendations to senior leadership. This role also drives innovation in predictive modeling, machine learning, and decision intelligence to support CaterPillar’s growth and sustainability goals.
Qualifications
Strong foundation in Data Science and Data Analytics, with proven experience applying these skills to real-world business problems.
Proficiency in Statistics and Pattern Recognition to design robust models, uncover trends, and interpret complex datasets.
Advanced Analytical Skills, including problem-solving, critical thinking, and the ability to translate data findings into strategic actions.
Extensive experience leading data teams, including hiring, coaching, and performance management at a senior or executive level.
Hands-on expertise with modern data science tools and languages (e.g., Python or R, SQL, machine learning frameworks) and cloud-based data platforms.
Background in building and deploying predictive models, recommendation systems, or optimization algorithms in production environments.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate cross-functionally with product, engineering, operations, and business stakeholders.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present technical concepts and strategic insights to non-technical audiences and executives.
Master’s degree or PhD in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field preferred.
Experience in marketplace, logistics, sustainability, or circular economy domains is an advantage.
