About The Role

The Principal Data Engineer role is pivotal in establishing and leading the data engineering foundation that underpins real-time decision-making, operational applications, analytics, machine learning/AI models, and data services across Medical Guardian. This position entails owning the design, implementation, and maturation of production-grade data pipelines and platforms, with a focus on real-time streaming, IoT telemetry, and cloud-based data services, primarily utilizing Azure, Databricks, and related technologies. The role demands a hands-on technical leader who can also provide strategic guidance, manage cross-functional stakeholders, and mentor engineering teams. The ideal candidate will excel in transforming ambiguous business needs into reliable, scalable data capabilities through pragmatic technical decisions, fostering a culture of high-quality engineering practices, and ensuring operational excellence in a fast-paced, startup-like environment.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of professional experience in data engineering or related fields
  • Extensive hands-on experience with Databricks, Spark, PySpark, SQL, Delta Lake, and Azure cloud services
  • Proficiency in designing and operating real-time streaming data pipelines and IoT telemetry ingestion
  • Strong knowledge of data architecture patterns such as Medallion architecture and Lakehouse frameworks
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automation, and production troubleshooting
  • Proven leadership skills in managing and mentoring data engineering teams
  • Ability to translate complex business requirements into scalable data solutions
  • Experience working with ML/AI, analytics, and data governance frameworks
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of working with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Background in healthtech, SaaS, digital products, or IoT environments is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, optimize, and maintain production-grade batch and streaming data pipelines on Azure and Databricks, focusing on IoT and telemetry use cases within a Medallion architecture
  • Create and manage ETL/ELT workflows for large volumes of structured, semi-structured, unstructured, and streaming data
  • Build reliable data products, APIs, and microservices supporting operational, analytical, and ML/AI teams
  • Utilize Python, PySpark, Spark SQL, Delta Lake, CI/CD tools, and related technologies to ensure maintainability, testing, and observability of data systems
  • Troubleshoot complex production pipeline issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective measures
  • Lead the design and implementation of real-time streaming ingestion and processing for medical device telemetry and operational data feeds using Azure Event Hubs, Stream Analytics, and Databricks
  • Define and enforce standards for data pipeline architecture, quality, security, and operational supportability
  • Set strategic direction for Databricks-based data platform architecture, including optimization and cost management
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to clarify data requirements, prioritize initiatives, and shape technical solutions
  • Manage, mentor, and develop data engineering team members, fostering a culture of high performance and continuous improvement
  • Partner with ML, analytics, and data science teams to enable reliable data pipelines and feature engineering for AI/ML models
  • Implement data governance, security, privacy, and compliance best practices across all data initiatives
  • Lead incident response, perform root cause analysis, and drive continuous improvements in data platform reliability and scalability
