Notifications generate hundreds of millions of events daily, serving as a critical data domain within Whatnot. Your responsibilities will include defining the technical direction for the Notifications data mart, ensuring its production-grade reliability, and establishing new data engineering patterns that can be adopted across the organization. You will work closely with cross-functional teams including Product Engineers, Data Scientists, ML Engineers, and the Analytics Platform team to make key architectural decisions related to data modeling, reliability, latency, and cost-efficiency. Your work will directly impact how data is captured, modeled, and utilized across the company, enabling insightful analytics, robust experimentation, and efficient machine learning workflows.

  • Proven expertise in designing and maintaining reliable, scalable production-grade data pipelines
  • Deep proficiency in SQL, including complex modeling, dependency management, and performance tuning
  • Experience writing production-quality code in Python or SQL, with familiarity in CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code workflows
  • Hands-on experience with modern data tooling such as Kafka, Debezium, dbt, Spark, Flink, Dagster, Airflow, Monte Carlo, Great Expectations
  • Experience operating cloud data warehouses like Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift, including schema design and workload optimization
  • Track record working with large-scale datasets (hundreds of millions of rows per day)
  • Ability to design data models that support analytics, machine learning, and operational debugging
  • Strong systems thinking, considering correctness, latency, cost, and maintainability
  • Self-starter with high autonomy and proactive problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in cross-functional environments

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end data architecture, including data capture, modeling, and serving strategies
  • Develop and operate high-volume batch data workflows with strict guarantees on latency, completeness, and accuracy
  • Design and implement canonical, domain-oriented data models serving as authoritative sources for analytics, ML, and production systems
  • Build and maintain data quality systems, including tests, lineage, monitoring, and anomaly detection
  • Automate operational workflows to eliminate manual data handoffs and ensure data reconciliation across systems
  • Support analytics, ML, and product teams by providing high-quality, maintainable, and self-healing data assets
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to make architectural decisions that optimize for cost, reliability, and performance
  • Establish data modeling standards, ownership boundaries, and data contracts across teams

Benefits

  • Generous holiday and time-off policies to promote work-life balance
  • Comprehensive health insurance options including Medical, Dental, and Vision coverage
  • Support for remote work with home office setup allowances and monthly stipends for cell phone and internet
