About The Role
The Data Engineer position at Michigan Farm Bureau is a critical role responsible for designing, building, and maintaining robust data pipelines that support the organization’s analytics, reporting, and strategic decision-making processes. The ideal candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams to understand data sources, optimize data flow, and ensure data integrity across various systems. This role requires a proactive approach to managing data architecture, identifying system changes, and adapting pipelines to meet evolving business needs. The Data Engineer will also collaborate with IT and business stakeholders to deliver scalable solutions that align with organizational goals.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree in information systems, computer science, or a related field. Equivalent experience may also be considered. Candidates should have three to five years of experience working with Microsoft SQL Server, T-SQL, Visual Studio IDE, and SSIS or similar ETL platforms. A solid understanding of computer hardware, operating systems, programming languages, and testing tools is essential. Familiarity with systems design and analysis techniques, along with a willingness to pursue ongoing training, is required. Preferred qualifications include experience with transactional and analytical data structures, knowledge of database best practices such as compression, indexing, and security, and prior experience working within the insurance industry.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and optimize data pipelines to support business analytics, reporting, and data warehousing initiatives.
- Identify source data systems, understand data flow, and recognize system changes impacting data pipelines.
- Modify and adapt data pipelines to accommodate updates triggered by source system modifications or business requirements.
- Collaborate with IT and business teams to gather requirements, provide technical expertise, and ensure solutions meet organizational needs.
- Monitor data pipeline performance, troubleshoot issues, and implement improvements to enhance efficiency and reliability.
- Ensure data quality, security, and compliance with organizational standards and best practices.
- Document data processes, architecture, and workflows for future reference and compliance purposes.
- Participate in project planning, provide progress updates, and communicate potential risks or dependencies to stakeholders.
- Stay current with emerging data technologies and continuously develop skills in data management and engineering.
