About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Data Engineer to join our innovative team. In this role, you will operate at the intersection of backend systems, data pipelines, and AI-powered workflows. Your primary responsibility will be to design, develop, and maintain scalable data systems that support both customer-facing features and internal analytics. This is a strategic role that requires a deep understanding of data modeling, system architecture, and AI integration. You will have broad ownership of projects from conception to deployment, working closely with product managers, engineers, and operational teams to translate complex workflows into robust, automated systems. The ideal candidate will possess a strong data instincts, a generalist mindset, and a passion for leveraging AI to enhance business outcomes. This is a remote-first position within the United States, with optional in-person collaboration opportunities in New York and Chicago.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in owning and operating large-scale, data-intensive systems in production environments.
• Extensive experience with designing and implementing data pipelines (ETL/ELT, event-driven, or workflow-based systems).
• Proficiency in TypeScript as the primary programming language; experience with other typed languages such as Python is a plus.
• Strong data modeling, system design, and architecture skills with the ability to go from zero to one and scale efficiently.
• Experience working within fintech, tax, or other regulated industries, with an understanding of security, compliance, and auditability considerations.
• Familiarity with AI tools and frameworks, actively integrating AI into development workflows.
• Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate ambiguous workflows into structured, automated systems.
• Self-motivated with a generalist approach, capable of working independently with minimal guidance.

Responsibilities

• Transform complex product and operational workflows into well-structured, scalable systems that integrate data pipelines, backend services, and AI-driven logic.
• Design and develop agentic AI systems capable of reasoning, taking actions, and orchestrating multi-step workflows beyond simple language model integrations.
• Develop and maintain production-grade data pipelines that support both customer-facing features and internal analytics and intelligence systems.
• Build backend services primarily using TypeScript, with strategic use of Python where appropriate for data processing or AI components.
• Design modular APIs and system boundaries that facilitate flexible, composable AI and data workflows.
• Collaborate with product and operational teams to convert real-world processes into scalable, AI-augmented systems.
• Utilize AI-assisted development tools throughout the software lifecycle—from prototyping and debugging to system design and deployment.
• Enhance system reliability, observability, and performance, ensuring high availability and robustness of data and AI services.
• Take ownership of architectural decisions within your domain, balancing rapid development with long-term maintainability and scalability.
