About The Role
As a Senior GIS Data Engineer at Xplore Inc., you will be instrumental in shaping and maintaining the company's spatial data infrastructure. This is a remote position open to candidates across Canada, offering the flexibility to work from anywhere within the country. Your primary responsibility will be to design, develop, and optimize the enterprise data lakehouse platform and Machine Learning (ML) stack, focusing on geospatial data workflows that support network planning, coverage analysis, and serviceability assessments. You will oversee the end-to-end GIS data engineering functions, including spatial data ingestion, processing, and publishing, ensuring data accuracy, reliability, and accessibility for internal teams and external partners.
You will also mentor intermediate and junior engineers, contribute to platform standards, and collaborate closely with analytics and AI teams to deliver high-quality, trusted geospatial workflows. Your expertise will directly impact the company's ability to leverage spatial data for strategic decision-making, network optimization, and customer service enhancements. This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of GIS technology, data engineering, and telecommunications, contributing to Canada's digital infrastructure development.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess 7-10 years of experience in data engineering with a strong focus on GIS and spatial data management. Expertise in Databricks, including Spark optimization, Delta Lake, and Unity Catalog governance, is essential. Proficiency in Python and PySpark for production-grade data pipelines is required. Candidates should demonstrate a deep understanding of GIS concepts such as PostGIS, spatial SQL, coordinate systems, and ArcGIS workflows (Online and Enterprise). Experience with H3 or similar spatial indexing systems at scale is highly desirable. Additionally, proven experience in managing vendor data contracts and project deliverables, along with knowledge of CI/CD practices, infrastructure-as-code, and data observability solutions, will be considered assets. Strong communication skills and mentorship experience are also important for success in this role.
Responsibilities
- Own and operate GIS workflows that support eCoverage qualification, including H3 indexing, framework selection, and probabilistic coverage modeling within Databricks.
- Develop and maintain spatial feature engineering pipelines on Databricks that supply machine learning models with production-ready geospatial features for RF propagation, churn prediction, and demand forecasting.
- Engineer the data pipeline for publishing spatial layers from Databricks to ArcGIS Online and Enterprise, ensuring reliable and high-performance delivery of geospatial data.
- Optimize compute resources and costs on Databricks by tuning Spark jobs, partitioning strategies, and spatial query performance, utilizing both Classic and Serverless environments.
- Manage large-scale spatial data ingestion, including shapefiles, rasters, and vector tiles, into Unity Catalog with governed schema and lineage tracking.
- Lead vendor engagements by defining geospatial use cases, drafting data contracts, and overseeing third-party deliverables to ensure alignment with project goals.
- Collaborate with data science, analytics, and network teams to translate business requirements into scalable spatial data products and workflows.
- Implement governance frameworks, including data lineage, cataloging, and quality assurance, to ensure compliance and data integrity.
- Translate complex business needs into scalable, efficient data engineering solutions that enhance operational capabilities and strategic insights.
