About The Role

The Cybersecurity Analyst at Sentara Health is a vital member of the security team responsible for safeguarding the organization’s digital infrastructure and sensitive health information. This fully remote position requires a proactive approach to cybersecurity, focusing on incident response, threat detection, and system monitoring within a healthcare environment. The role involves analyzing security logs, managing security information and event management (SIEM) systems, and responding swiftly to security incidents to prevent data breaches and ensure compliance with HIPAA and other healthcare regulations. The Cybersecurity Analyst will participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation, providing critical support during security incidents outside of regular working hours. This position offers an excellent opportunity to work in a dynamic healthcare setting, utilizing advanced cybersecurity tools and techniques to protect patient and organizational data.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of 3 years of experience in cybersecurity, incident response, or health IT security, with a strong understanding of healthcare-specific security protocols. A bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, IT, or a related field is required, or alternatively, extensive relevant experience (5+ years) without a degree. Proven expertise with Endpoint Detection & Response (EDR) tools and SIEM solutions is essential, especially within healthcare environments. Relevant certifications such as CISSP or CEH are preferred, demonstrating a commitment to professional growth and industry standards. Candidates must have a solid understanding of HIPAA regulations, risk management practices, and cybersecurity best practices. Strong communication skills are necessary to effectively collaborate with clinical, IT, compliance, and third-party vendors. Availability for a 24/7 on-call schedule is mandatory to ensure rapid response to security incidents.

Responsibilities

The Cybersecurity Analyst will be responsible for monitoring all security platforms for potential threats and incidents. They will lead and support incident response efforts, from identification and analysis to containment, eradication, and recovery, with a focus on protecting Protected Health Information (PHI). The role involves analyzing logs, forensic data, and network traffic to detect suspicious activities and vulnerabilities. The analyst will help develop and fine-tune SIEM correlation rules and alerting mechanisms to enhance threat detection capabilities. Participation in a 24/7 on-call rotation ensures rapid response to security events, including after-hours and weekend incidents. The role also involves ensuring that incident handling processes comply with HIPAA and other relevant regulations, maintaining detailed documentation of all response actions for legal and audit purposes. Collaboration with clinical, IT, and security teams is essential to assess risks, remediate vulnerabilities, and strengthen the organization’s security posture. The analyst will contribute to healthcare-specific threat hunting, vulnerability assessments, and security exercises to improve resilience against cyber threats. Additionally, they will stay current on emerging cyber threats, vulnerabilities, and regulatory updates affecting healthcare operations.
