About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Bank Credit Risk Lead Analyst to join our team. In this pivotal role, you will leverage advanced analytics and industry-leading practices to proactively identify, assess, and mitigate emerging and non-traditional risks within our banking portfolio. Your expertise will be instrumental in translating complex, forward-looking signals—such as macroeconomic trends, regulatory changes, and industry shifts—into actionable strategies that optimize portfolio performance while aligning with USAA’s risk appetite. The role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to monitor evolving risk dynamics, inform strategic decision-making, and develop comprehensive risk mitigation plans. The position offers a flexible work environment, with an expectation of being in the office four days per week, and can be based in several key locations including San Antonio, Plano, Phoenix, Colorado Springs, Charlotte, or Tampa. Please note that relocation assistance is not provided for this role.
Responsibilities
- Utilize industry-leading analytical techniques to identify risks and opportunities within the managed portfolio, translating insights into effective credit risk strategies.
- Apply banking product knowledge and critical thinking to lead detailed analyses, identify root causes, and develop clear, strategic recommendations that influence senior decision-makers.
- Partner with stakeholders to develop, refine, and implement credit risk strategies across various lines of defense, ensuring analytical frameworks are robust and insights are clearly communicated.
- Lead analyses of internal and external scoring data to identify and prevent first-party fraud, enhancing the organization’s risk mitigation capabilities.
- Leverage industry knowledge and benchmarking to inform and influence credit strategy development, ensuring competitiveness and compliance.
- Proactively develop advanced quantitative analyses based on diverse data sources to clarify ambiguous issues and uncover emerging risks.
- Manage the development and presentation of comprehensive risk and financial reports that support senior management and committee oversight, highlighting key risk indicators and performance metrics.
- Design and execute complex financial risk sensitivity analyses to evaluate potential impacts and inform strategic adjustments.
- Oversee the creation and maintenance of credit strategy infrastructure, ensuring strategies are accurately implemented and monitored.
- Apply expert programming skills and analytical techniques to analyze credit data, driving insights and operational improvements.
- Provide thought leadership, coaching, and mentorship to team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and analytical excellence.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders to guide teams in developing and executing strategic initiatives, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
- Lead and mentor analysts, acting as a thought leader within the analytics and risk management community, and potentially overseeing model ownership responsibilities.
- Ensure all risks associated with business activities are properly identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with policies and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field; or equivalent relevant experience (minimum of 4 years).
- At least 8 years of experience in analytical roles focusing on risk assessment, advanced analytics, or credit risk data analysis; or an advanced degree with a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience.
- Strong understanding of banking regulations, risk management practices, and compliance standards.
- Exceptional presentation and communication skills, with the ability to convey complex insights clearly and effectively.
- High attention to detail, accuracy, and strong business acumen.
- Proven research, investigation, and problem-solving skills, demonstrating good judgment in complex situations.
- Experience influencing cross-functional stakeholders and developing risk-related reports and dashboards.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Expertise in data analysis tools such as SQL, SAS, or similar BI software for data segmentation, aggregation, and statistical analysis.
- Knowledge of federal laws and regulations, including FCRA, Reg B, UDAAP/UDAP, OCC Standards, and Credit Risk Guidance.

- Extensive experience (6+ years) using SAS or SQL for data extraction, manipulation, and sophisticated analysis across multiple data sources.
- Proven ability to communicate complex analytical results and strategic recommendations to senior leadership and diverse stakeholders.
- Experience leveraging AI and LLM tools, such as GPT-based copilots, to enhance coding efficiency, automate processes, and support risk analysis.
- Track record of identifying and addressing "white space" or novel risk problems, especially those influenced by macroeconomic and policy factors like inflation or government employment shifts.
