- Company Description Benchmark is a business intelligence platform purpose-built for college athletics, focused on aggregating, structuring, and delivering operational and financial data from athletic departments. The platform enables administrators to access clear benchmarks that support informed decisions in areas such as budgeting, hiring, and scheduling. Benchmark is partnered with more than 25 athletic departments across the United States, helping them understand their position relative to peers. By transforming complex data into actionable insights, Benchmark supports more efficient, data-driven management of collegiate athletic programs.
- Role Description The Chief Data Officer (CDO) is a full-time remote role responsible for leading Benchmark’s data strategy and ensuring the effective use of data across the organization and with partner athletic departments. The CDO will oversee data governance frameworks, set data quality standards, and manage policies that ensure secure, compliant, and ethical data use. Day-to-day responsibilities include directing data management operations, guiding data science initiatives, and collaborating with product and engineering teams to optimize data architectures and analytics capabilities. The CDO will work closely with executive leadership and client stakeholders to translate business needs into data-driven solutions, improve reporting and benchmarking products, and support strategic decision-making in college athletics. This role also involves mentoring data teams, evaluating new tools and technologies, and establishing metrics to measure the impact of data initiatives.
- Qualifications
- Strong expertise in data governance and data management, including developing policies, standards, and frameworks for secure and compliant data use.
- Proficiency in data quality practices and data science, with experience designing and overseeing processes that ensure accurate, reliable, and actionable data.
- Advanced analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex datasets, build meaningful insights, and communicate findings clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Proven leadership experience managing cross-functional data teams and collaborating with product, engineering, and business stakeholders.
- Experience designing and implementing data architectures, business intelligence dashboards, and analytics solutions, preferably in SaaS or data-focused environments.
- Relevant academic background such as a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Information Systems, or a related field.
- Familiarity with college athletics or higher education operations is beneficial, as is experience working with financial and operational data.
- Ability to thrive in a remote work environment, demonstrating strong communication, time management, and self-direction.
