The location in Port Alberni, BC, is seeking talented professionals to fill the position of Business Analyst. About The Role
The Business Analyst at Domtar reports directly to the controller and is responsible for the efficient delivery and reporting of financial information related to the manufacturing operations at the Port Alberni mill. This role is crucial in ensuring accurate month-end processes, supporting strategic decision-making, and providing detailed manufacturing cost, operational, and financial analysis.
The Business Analyst plays a key role in the development of annual operating plans, working closely with various departments to analyze cost structures, production settings, and process efficiencies. Strong leadership, communication, and variance analysis skills are essential for success in this position, as is the ability to develop a comprehensive understanding of the mill's operations and cost drivers.
This role also involves supporting new product development initiatives, participating in continuous improvement projects, and providing mentorship and training to less experienced financial staff members. The Business Analyst's contributions are vital in aligning operational activities with strategic goals and ensuring financial targets are met efficiently.
Qualifications
A Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required. Candidates should have between 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in financial analysis, manufacturing accounting, or a similar role. Possession of a CPA designation is considered an asset, demonstrating advanced knowledge in accounting principles and practices. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, proficiency in financial modeling, and experience with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis. Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across departments are also essential for this position.
Responsibilities
- Manage month-end closing activities, including production setting, furnish balancing, product cost allocations, grade costing, and product statement preparation and reporting.
- Coordinate and prepare monthly latest view forecasts for the Port Alberni mill, including production setting and furnish balance, and submit these forecasts to Corporate Finance in Richmond and Fort Mill.
- Conduct ad hoc financial analyses related to mill operations, product costing, and process improvements to support operational decision-making.
- Assist in the preparation and coordination of the annual budget, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives and operational realities.
- Participate actively in strategic planning processes, focusing on grade mix, production settings, furnish balancing, and cost management.
- Support new product development efforts by working with production and sales teams to assess costs, profitability, and market viability.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by identifying, recording, and tracking projects aimed at operational efficiency and cost reduction.
- Prepare the annual operating plan for key manufacturing cost elements, including production setting, furnish balance, and grade costing.
- Provide mentorship and training to new hires and less experienced finance team members, fostering a collaborative and knowledgeable work environment.
